Back in the halcyon days of 2018 or thereabouts, I started experimenting with alternative tuning systems in MetaSynth. Although I'd heard tunes written in a few of them, I was curious to hear others, and especially non-octave based ones; that is, tunings based on subdividing harmonics other than the second one: divisions of the third harmonic (i.e., equal divisions of the twelfth) and so on.

It was often hard to find examples of music in a style I would enjoy written in those tunings, so each time I was curious about how one might sound, I would just start tinkering with it myself. Eventually, I finished a series of tracks based on these experiments. For the Outright EP, I rounded up the best of them, did a little final tweaking and mastering, and shipped the works off to Deftly Demolition with some stunning artwork courtesy of the ever-creative Edgar Stephen Curo. The result is the Outright EP now available from Voidstar Productions.

Some microtonal tuning details. For those who can't read my chicken scratch, the tracks on the EP shake out as follows :

* ‪In Metasynth, you can do a spectral analysis of a sound and export a slice of it to use as a filter and so on. One very under-rated thing you can also do is create a custom scale based on that spectrum slice and import it for use in the image synth. The sequences used in Somniloquy were done this way, with the original sound being a particular noisy bell recording I had.‬
